Small Independent Cidermakers Association- 90% juice mark
Celtic Marches have recently joined the Small Independent Cidermakers Association. Members can bear the SICA mark of quality. It is specifically aimed at UK Cider and Perry makers who are able to prove that their products are 90% fermented juice and not made from concentrate.
SICA’s objective is to make it clear to consumers exactly what they are buying. It aims to help consumers get past all the marketing ploys that the big brands use which make people think that they are buying a genuine product made using fermented juice rather than concentrate. As we all know the best ciders are made from juice and not concentrate!
Why 90%? The reasoning behind the 90% juice mark is due to the fact that it would be near on impossible to say it is 100% juice. The producer would need to dry every single apple after it was washed, and it is incredibly hard to confirm the small changes between 1-2% without laboratory testing. Not all producers are able to have a laboratory on site. With a 90% benchmark, cider producers must be able to back up their claims with the evidence and be easily audited on this. The quality mark is audited by KIWA, a well established auditor with the responsibility of auditing some of Britain’s most recognisable quality marks.
The Celtic Marches traditional Abrahall’s range fits perfectly into this category. With each of these 6% ciders being made from over 90% juice.
Abrahalls AD is a skilfully crafted dry cider; well-rounded and easy to drink. It is made from 100% cider apples grown on the family farm in Bishops Frome. Made from a blend of bittersweet and sharp cider apples – Dabinett, Michelin and a smattering of Kingston Black the old cidermaker’s favourite.
